"Change happens through movement and movement heals"
Every few years a new fitness fad rolls into town on shiny wheels promising a full body safe workout that will make you feel good and look better. Barre Classes seem to be yet another example of hype and marketing and glossy Instagram unbelievable pictures.
As a Pilates and a Yoga teacher I am automatically suspicious of hybrid exercise programs that claim to offer what Pilates and Yoga offer and more. Piloxing (standing Pilates, boxing and dance) Piloga (Pilates and Yoga) Cyclelates, YAS ( yoga and spinning) and Cardiolates (Pilates on rebounder trampolines). While these shiny new workout mashups are great to prevent boredom are they worth doing long term? In particular do Barre classes based on a mixture of Pilates, Yoga and Dance have any long term benefits?
So What is Barre Class?
The first thing that is worth mentioning is that Barre Classes (like the Pilates Method) are far from new. In fact, the first Barre workouts started over 50 years ago in London. In 1959 Lotte Berk opened up The Lotte Berk Method. While suffering a back injury, Lotte Berk combined her ballet barre training with rehabilitative therapy, and thus The Lotte Berk Method was born. In 1971 the method was introduced to the United States when Lydia Bach, one of Lotte’s students, opened The Lotte Berk Method in Manhattan. Since then Barre workouts have steadily gained popularity.
What to Expect at Barre Class?
